Mise-en -scene
Different type of clothing/makeup to reflect different eras
Different fonts to reflect modernity vs 80's
unique colour pallete to represent preference of that era
2) Billboard Poster Research (Era Focus)
You must research THREE professional billboard or large-format posters, one from each era:
1. 1980s or 1990s pop artist promotion
The Specials (1980s) uk tour poster
High top shot of the band
Specific colour scheme (red/black)
List of dates of tour
2. 2000s or 2010s pop artist promotion
Justin Timberlake's debut solo album "Justified"
brand-his own name
specific colour scheme
bold name of the album
3. Contemporary (2018–present) pop artist promotion
Taylor Swift: Eras tour
Clean high contrast visual
Modern typography
Digital convergence- DISNEY
Choose artists that are clearly representative of each era.
3) Media Language Analysis
For each billboard poster, analyse how visual design communicates meaning and appeals to its audience.
You should analyse:
Layout & composition
(scale, hierarchy, central image, simplicity for roadside viewing)Typography
(font style, size, era connotations, readability)Colour palette
(neon, muted, monochrome, saturation and era signifiers)Imagery
(pose, gaze, styling, realism vs performance)Branding
(logos, streaming platforms, consistency)
Then, explain how these choices reflect the era of pop music being represented.
4) Representation and Era identity
Explain how each poster represents:
The artist
The music culture of the era
Attitudes to fame, performance, and identity
Consider:
Fashion and styling
Gender representation
Star image
Youth culture vs nostalgia
Authenticity vs commercialisation
Apply at least one theory, such as:
Stuart Hall – Representation
Postmodernism (nostalgia, pastiche, remixing eras)
5) Audience appeal
For each era-based poster, explain:
Who the primary audience is
How it may also appeal to other age groups
How nostalgia is used to attract older audiences
How modern design elements attract younger audiences
Link this directly to the documentary’s aim to appeal to “people of all ages interested in pop music.”
6) Streaming services and industry conventions
Research how streaming services (e.g. Netflix) promote music documentaries.
Analyse:
Common visual conventions (minimal text, strong imagery)
High-contrast colour grading – dark backgrounds with spotlight highlights signal prestige and seriousness.
Minimal text – platforms rely on brand recognition rather than detailed information; title + artist name is often enough.
Logo and branding is consistent ie netflic in captial and red- immediately signals platform ownership and exclusivity.
Use of logos and release dates
Logo often appears in the top or bottm corner of posters, intentionally sized so it doesnt dominate the content but still reinforces brand assosciation with the documentary.
How platforms communicate where and how to watch
“Now streaming” or “Watch today” replaces release dates.
Platform logos are dominant visual elements.
Through billboards, posters, social media posts- all showing a unified release date
Minimalist billboard designs mirror platform thumbnails for brand consistency.
QR codes are increasingly used so passers-by can go straight to the platform page.
Clip drops featuring emotional or shocking moments to spark discussion
How global audiences affect design choices
Posters often avoid text-heavy slogans so they translate easily.
Imagery emphasises universal themes (performance, emotion, struggle).

7) Application to your coursework
This section must directly link your research to your final production.
Answer the following:
How will each era influence the design of your three billboards?
80s- Bold neon colours,
What visual codes will you use to differentiate eras?
Different colour schemes, different clothing style
How will you maintain brand consistency across all three posters?
Logo of Netflix throughout the 3 posters.
How will you promote your band from Task One as contemporary pop?
Use band name logo, consistent colour scheme that matches task 1
What design skills do you need to develop before production?
Planning and sketching
1) Plan the content for your first billboard poster:
Title of the documentary film (must be NEW original mainstream music magazine you have invented): SAPPHIRE SKY- BEGINNING TO A NEW ERA
Name of streaming service the documentary will feature on- Netflix/Amazon Prime
Original image (the band you promoted for one of your TikTok music videos)
Release date of the documentary- 01/02/26
Ways your billboard poster will represent the contemporary pop era
Font style / colour scheme, additional design aspects: Modern font, Bright colour palette
2) Plan the three images you will use for the billboard posters - use the elements of mise-en-scene (CLAMPS). One image has to be the band you promoted in one of your TikTok music videos required to meet the minimum content in the brief.
3) Research and select the font or typography you will use for your billboard posters. This is a critical element of your print work - the brief requires a consistent house style running through all of your pages.
4) Produce A4 sketches of your billboard poster designs and scan it/upload a picture to your blog.
5) Finally, create the pages in Adobe Photoshop or InDesign so you have the documents ready to go in terms of adding your text and images. This will need to include:
A3 landscape
Photoshoot
1) Who do you need to photograph for your billboard posters? Remember, you need three original images across the whole print production.
90s: Princess and me
2000s: princess
2018- present: Princess and me
2) What camera shots do you need? Write a shot list or draw a storyboard for your photoshoots. Make sure you plan a variety of camera shots you will look to capture - medium shots, close-ups etc.
shots:
medium shot/close-up on the artist face
low angle to show superiority
long shot to show stage presence
3) Plan the mise-en-scene. What costume, props or make-up will you require for your photoshoots?
80s clothing style- bright neon colours with baggy jeans, highlighted pink hair, pink lipstick
2000s: bell bottom jeans low rise, fitted plain top, vintage jewellery, smoky eyes, volumed hair, blonde/fringe
cotemporary: hoodie, classy, elegant, natural makeup
4) Finally, note down the time and date for your photoshoots. This may be inside or outside school (or a combination of both). You will have Media lesson time for this after the mock exams.
Statement of Intent
1) Once you have completed your print research and planning, go back to your statement of intent and make sure you have included the print brief in your final draft. Then, submit the final draft statement of intent to your teacher. The due date for this will be confirmed by your coursework teacher.
Use your Media coursework lessons to complete these planning tasks - homework time should be exclusively to revise for mocks.
My billboard posters will be promoting a music documentary titled "Echoes through the Decades". This documentary will be promoted on Netflix, as streaming platforms dominate contemporary media consumption and are known for producing successful music documentaries. The posters will represent three different musical eras that influence the band: the 1980s, the 2000s and the contemporary period, reflecting the theme of nostalgia and the evolution of pop music. Each poster will follow key billboard conventions including the documentary title, streaming platform, release date, tagline and original photography.
In terms of media language, I have used different visual styles in each poster to reflect codes and conventions of the specific era. The 1980s poster uses bright colours, bold typography and retro-inspired imagery to evoke nostalgia and the vibrant aesthetic commonly associated with pop culture from that era. The 2000s poster features softer pastel colours, playful graphics and imagery of musical instruments such as guitar and keyboards to reflect early 2000s pop culture and the DIY music aesthetic associated with that era. The contemporary poster uses blurred imagery, darker lighting, and a more cinematic composition to create a modern and professional feel typical of current music documentaries. Across all posters, I have used central framing of the artist and consistent typeface and clear branding to ensure that all documentary title and streaming platforms remain recognizable, and I have made sure to create them in a portrait placement as it is used in a conventional billboard poster style. The use of original photography helps create authenticity and reflect industry expectations for promotional media.
My posters also consider media representation. The central artist is presented as confident and creatively female musician who challenges stereotypes that often portray women in the music industry primarily through appearances rather than talent. By showing the artist interacting with musical instruments and performance environment, the posters emphasize her role as an active creator. This reflects a more positive theory of identity as media representations can provide positive role models and encourage audiences to construct their own identities. Additionally, the posters avoid overly sexualized imagery, which challenges the traditional male gaze theory proposed by Mulvey, instead focusing on the artist's creativity and passion for music. Target audience for the documentary is people of all ages who enjoy pop music, particularly young adults and teenagers who engage with streaming platforms and music culture. However, the use of multiple eras also appeal to older audiences who may feel nostalgic about earlier decades of pop music. This broad audience reflects the popularity of music documentaries on streaming platforms. The posters aim to attract attention through bright colour schemes, clear typography, and visually engaging imagery, which are typical conventions used in advertising to capture audiences quickly in public spaces such as billboards.
Finally, my posters reflect the media industry and digital convergence. By promoting the documentary on Netflix, the posters acknowledge the shift from traditional television broadcasting to online streaming services. Audiences can view promotional materials such as posters on social media or in public advertising spaces before watching the documentary on their personal devices, demonstrating how different media platforms work together to promote content in the contemporary media landscape.
