Mise-en-scene recreation practical task

The Blair Witch Project - Apology Scene

MISE-EN-SCENE

Costume: To mirror the original character, I had my actor wear a durag to act as the beanie, as no other details in the frame are visible.

Lighting: The overall ambiance is dark, but I utilized my phone flashlight to create a harsh light on one side of his face and to create a contrast between light and dark.

Actors’ Expressions: I ensured he appeared as sorrowful and vulnerable as possible, just like in the original.

Make-up: He is not wearing any makeup, reflecting the raw, unadorned look of the original scene.

Props: There are no props involved.

Setting: I filmed in a room with a black backdrop to maximize the darkness of the lighting.

Script
In a dark pitch room, a harsh light casts shadows on his face, which displays a deeply sorrowful expression as he apologizes to everyone with teary eyes and regrets.

SANDEEP: I just want to apologize to everyone ...

Heavy breathing, on the verge of tears.

SANDEEP:  to Mike's mum ...to Joshua's mum... to my mum..

Still crying as he speaks

SANDEEP: I'm so (pause) sorry to everyone.

SANDEEP: I was being ..naive.

Shot List
Shot 1: A single, lengthy shot that is zoomed in on the actor's face.

RECREATION SCENE:

When recreating this scene from The Blair Witch Project, I first ensured my actor's head was covered to match the original character. For the setting, we chose an empty, dark music room and utilized a black background to achieve a more dramatic blackout effect, capturing it with a camera. Next, I used my phone's flashlight on the right side of his face to replicate the unnatural lighting from the original. We filmed everything in one continuous take, as it’s a one-shot scene that doesn’t require cuts. Afterward, for the editing, I added background audio of "an empty room noise" which mimicked the background sound of the original video and I also used a slightly warm filter to create a better contrast of light and dark. The scene was also cut off when the actor looked around in order to create an enigma code. This concluded my editing.
